Why September and October are good months for finding a new job.

Along with January and February, September and October rank amongst the best months of the year to find a new job. There are sound reasons for this.

From an employer perspective, the summer holiday season is now over, and most employers will be back at their desks and focused on what is needed to meet the objectives for the year. This may highlight the need to recruit additional staff if they are to achieve their annual targets. In larger companies, department heads may also want to use any remaining budget they have for staff recruitment before the year end, or risk losing allocated funds. Companies may also want to bring in new recruits and allow them sufficient time to bed in before the disruption of the end of year holiday season which starts in earnest late November and December.

Another reason why the early fall is a good time for job seekers is because opportunities start to become available. Research has indicated that many employees actively start looking for new jobs after they get back from their summer vacation. In a Monster survey, 47% of respondents indicated that they were going definitely to look for a new position once they returned from holiday, with a further 33% likely to do so. This means that there is “job churn” – as people move on, vacancies become available which have to be filled.

So, if you are thinking about changing jobs or applying for a new position, now might be a good time to do so. Make sure your CV and LinkedIn profiles are up to date, consider signing-up with recruitment agencies and Job Boards, and let your professional networks know that you are in the market for a move.

The onus is now on you to start the process. Apart from a very fortunate few, you have to find that new job. It won’t come looking for you. What are you waiting for?
